About this event

A Talk by John New

After retiring from a senior post in local government John has had time to devote to his interest in the industrial archaeology of the early wooden waggonways/Tudor mining, and railways both full size and as models. He is a Director of The Stephenson Locomotive Society and Editor of their Journal, member of the Board of the Early Railways Conference serial. John has published works on the early seventeen century waggonways, why steam replaced horses during the Napoleonic war period and evolution of the railway routes to Portsmouth. As 2025 was being celebrated as Rail 200 he prepared this talk on the Railways of Portland, by coincidence also celebrating 200 years in 2025-6.
